Legend says Siena was founded by Sieno and Ascanio, sons of Remus and throughout the city you can find statues of a wolf with the two twins (Romulus and Remus) feeding on. History tells us that Siena has Etruscan roots and in 30AD became a major Roman military outpost. Florence was Siena's greatest rival and competitor in culture, art and most importantly, trade and after many wars, one of which Florence besieged Siena and actually catapulted dung and donkeys over its walls, Siena was eventually incorporated into Florentine territory and administration. During the years of 1150-1300 great artists were adorning the city with beautiful squares and churches in the Gothic style. The council of nine helped to fund these improvements one of which is the Piazza del Campo which is divided into 9 segments representing each member. Today Siena has a powerful banking and tourism industry.
